Results Matter – But They Are Only Part of the Story
By Dr. Fazal Dad MBE | Principal, Blackburn College
Results day can feel like one of the biggest moments in a young person’s life. It reflects years of hard work, dedication and ambition – and can open the door to new opportunities, fresh goals and exciting careers. But exam results are only one part of a much bigger story.
Qualifications can open doors to higher education, apprenticeships and employment, but they are not the only measure of future success. In a fast-changing world, what matters is not simply what you know, but the character, resilience and adaptability you bring – and your willingness to keep learning. As Principal and Chief Executive of Blackburn College, I see the determination and talent of our young people every day.
Why Qualifications Still Matter
Results matter because they create choices. Strong qualifications can lead to university, apprenticeships, skilled employment and career progression. They also reflect commitment, hard work and the ability to meet a challenge.
Educational achievement is closely linked to better employment prospects and earning potential. For many young people, qualifications also support social mobility, breaking down barriers and creating opportunities that might otherwise remain out of reach. Education remains one of the most powerful ways to transform lives, raise aspirations and strengthen communities.
Results also tell a story of dedication and perseverance. For some young people, top grades will be the headline. For others, overcoming personal challenges or making remarkable progress will be every bit as significant. Success deserves to be recognised in all its forms.
This year’s Blackburn College results offer inspiring examples of what can happen when hard work, determination and industry engagement come together. Layla Patel, 18, achieved a Distinction* in the T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction and received an unprecedented four-degree apprenticeship offers in quantity surveying. She chose a degree apprenticeship with Bowmer and Kirkland Ltd – a fantastic achievement that reflects employers’ growing demand for technically skilled young people and the opportunities available through vocational and technical education.
Why Qualifications Are Not the Whole Story
Employers increasingly look beyond grades. Today’s workplaces need people who can combine knowledge and technical expertise with practical skills and strong personal qualities.
Reliability, resilience, initiative, curiosity, adaptability and a positive attitude all matter. These qualities help people respond to change, tackle challenges and continue growing throughout their careers.
As technology reshapes every industry, the ability to learn, adapt and work well with others is becoming just as important as formal qualifications.
Experience Brings Learning to Life
Meaningful work experience can make all the difference. Employers consistently value communication, teamwork, problem-solving, professionalism, time management and digital confidence.
Work experience gives young people the chance to put classroom learning into practice. It builds confidence and professional behaviours while offering a clearer understanding of what employers expect.
Whether the setting is healthcare, engineering, manufacturing, retail, professional services or the public sector, time in the workplace helps students explore possible careers and develop the skills employers value most.
Strong qualifications and practical experience are a powerful combination – and an excellent foundation for the future.
Success Is a Team Effort
Success rarely happens alone. Families, parents and carers provide encouragement, guidance and support that can keep young people motivated and ambitious.
Simple actions can have a lasting impact: encouraging good attendance, supporting reading and effective study habits, celebrating progress, and keeping conversations about future ambitions positive.
Schools and colleges have an equally important role. Beyond delivering qualifications, they help young people build confidence, character, resilience and employability skills. Careers education, employer engagement, enrichment and meaningful work experience all prepare students for adult life and the workplace.
They are also often best placed to support learners facing additional challenges, ensuring that those furthest from opportunity receive the guidance and intervention they need to fulfil their potential.
Employers Can Open Doors
Employers are vital partners in developing the workforce of the future. Work placements, apprenticeships, mentoring and industry projects give young people valuable experience and help them become work-ready.
As technology transforms industries, closer collaboration between employers, schools and colleges has never mattered more. These partnerships ensure that young people gain the knowledge, skills and experience modern businesses need.
Make Every Opportunity Count
Young people can maximise their potential by making the most of every opportunity. Good attendance, active participation, independent study, volunteering, enrichment and work experience all contribute to long-term success.
Ask for help when you need it, be open to feedback and stay positive about learning. The small actions repeated consistently are often the ones that make the greatest difference.
A Big Opportunity for Lancashire
This matters enormously to Blackburn with Darwen and the wider Lancashire economy. Our region has a proud history of enterprise, innovation and resilience. From advanced manufacturing and engineering to healthcare, logistics, digital industries, education and professional services, local employers need talented people who combine technical expertise with strong personal qualities.
As investment and innovation continue, demand will grow for people who can embrace new technologies while bringing adaptability, professionalism and a commitment to lifelong learning.
A highly skilled workforce is essential not only for individual success, but for stronger communities, greater productivity and sustained economic growth. Education is one of the most important investments we can make in Lancashire’s future.
If You Did Not Get the Grades You Expected
Although results are important, they do not define a person’s worth, talent or future potential.
If you did not achieve the grades you hoped for, results day is not the end of the road. Many successful people have faced setbacks, disappointments and unexpected changes of direction before finding the route that suited their abilities and ambitions.
There are always other pathways: resits, further study, apprenticeships, training programmes and employment. Different routes can lead to the same destination.
If your results were not what you hoped for, seek advice, explore your options and keep moving forward. Stay ambitious and resilient. One disappointing result should never decide what you can achieve tomorrow.
The Bigger Picture
Qualifications matter. They open doors, create choices and expand horizons. But they are still only one part of the story.
Long-term success comes from a blend of educational achievement, work experience, employability skills, character, adaptability and determination. In a world shaped by technological change and artificial intelligence, the ability to keep learning and embrace new opportunities will matter more than ever.
When young people combine strong academic foundations with workplace experience, digital confidence and a commitment to lifelong learning, they can build rewarding careers, contribute to their communities and fulfil their ambitions.
Above all, remember this: exam results matter, but they do not define your future. What matters most is what you do next. Whether you are celebrating or reconsidering your options, stay ambitious, stay resilient and keep moving forward. Your next chapter is still yours to write.
